Week 1 - Tutorial

Well as I said in my first post, in the first tute for this class I set up this blog. But when we first walked in the class gathered around to have a chat. After getting all the housekeeping out of the way we talked bout the tute*spark.

This weeks tute*spark was "how to distinguish between old and new technologies and when does new comm. tech become old communication technologies." What helped with my questions from the lecture is the tutors view that we can consider Old technologies as analog, and new technologies as the digital age. This definition makes it possible to distinguish between things like T.v. and phones which have been around for along time but are still considered new.

The concept of convergence was touched on which is the combination of different technologies to create a new communication technology. This would include things like smart phones, or internet capabilities on t.v.'s.

Week 1 - Lecture

So as I'm only just starting Uni this semester, the New Comm Tech Lecture on Monday was my introduction to Griffith. It was a different experience to what I remember from when I was at Uni many years ago studying business....

The way I remember Uni is a boring presentation of regurgitated information from the prescribed course text. But the Monday lecture was far from this! What I took away from the lecture was how we define "technology" and how do we define the difference between "old and new technologies".

We generally look at technology as advancements with little gadgets, but once things like cave painting and the development of literacy were "new" technologies. This point of view made me think what future generations will think of current technologies that we consider now to be so advanced.

With defining between "old" and "new" technologies the lecture pretty much drew the line at the t.v., so anything invented up to and including the t.v. is considered "old"; and all technologies since the t.v. is considered to be "new". This promoted the thought of what about plasma and LCD t.v.'s and even more recently 3D t.v.

First Blog EVER!!!!

Well, I guess I'll start of by introducing myself. My name is Brenton Taylor and I and 27 yrs old, I'm a first year Communications student at Griffith University on the Gold Coast. This blog is going to be my account on the happenings and my experience in the course New Communication Technologies.

So today is my second day at Uni after 7 yrs out of any class rooms and I have just set up my first blog account. While I'm not a techno-phobe I take a little while to jump onto the band wagon of the new gadgets and I have never had a blog before. Surprisingly setting up a blog is easy! Going from never having a blog to typing away took all of 5 minutes.

After my tutor explained that she uses her blog as an example of her previous work when going for interviews I am thinking it will be a great tool to promote myself after my degree...
